Institution Mixte Mahanaim

Institution Mixte Mahanaim (IMM)is a co-ed school located in Grand Saline, Haiti. During one of his many visits to his home town Grande Saline, the Rev. Lemaire Alerte was approached by community leaders expressing their concern for the need of a school that provides education beyond the 6th grade.  Typically, a public education is afforded up until the 6th grade in Haiti.  Families who reside in the countryside like Grande Saline, usually send their children to major city schools, beyond the 6th grade.  The closest town to Grand Saline was approximately 50 miles away.  This usually causes a breakdown in the family composition as children are forced to reside with relatives or in boarding homes in order to obtain an education beyond the 6th grade.  Through collaboration with the local church, and community leaders, Institution Mixte Mahanaim was founded in November 2007.  The school was housed in the local church and had an enrollment of approximately 47 students in grades 7-12.

The earthquake of 2010 brought an influx of students to IMM, increasing enrollment to 150 students.  Having outgrown the small space of the local Baptist church, the need for a larger building had become a priority for IMM. Through fundraising efforts and the generous support of regular donors including the Haitian Evangelical Church in Jersey City, NJ, IMM was able to break ground on the construction of their own building, which was completed in August 2010.

The school currently has an enrollment of approximately 140 students ranging from grades K-12.
